Texas: Declining Ticket Revenue Spurs Camera Contract
Loss of ticket revenue spurs a rush to install red light cameras in Corpus Christi, Texas.

On October 16, the city of Corpus Christi, Texas will begin testing a new red light camera system designed to halt an alarming drop in traffic ticket revenue. In 2001, police issued 2475 red light running citations. Last year, that number plunged to just 1121. As of last month, police had issued only 833 citations.

"I'm concerned by the decline (in tickets)," Corpus Christi Police Captain Robert MacDonald told the Caller-Times newspaper. "That's one of the reasons we're looking at alternative means of compliance."

Five companies will vie for the opportunity to take a 25-50 percent cut of each $150 ticket issued, including Australian vendor Redflex, Germany's Traffipax, Siemens, and Nestor. The city plans to select the winner, have the system in place and begin issuing expensive citations by January 1.
