Hong Kong Taxi Drivers Strike Against Red Light Penalties
Professional drivers in Hong Kong demand engineering alternatives to increased red light running penalties.
Professional drivers of trucks, buses and taxis in Hong Kong marched on the island's government offices to protest a proposed increase in penalties for red light running. The changes could mean a suspended license after two or three offenses, a devastating blow to those who make their living with their driving license. About 150 protesters took part in the hour-long walk and threaten to block traffic if the proposal is approved tomorrow. They suggest that countdown timers be installed at intersections as an alternative so that they will know how much time is left before the light turns red.
Transport Secretary Sarah Liao wants to increase the red light running fine to HK$600 (US $77) with five demerit points, up from HK$450 and three points. A license is suspended at fifteen points.
